The device has two modes of operation:

Base station - The device connects to the existing network via cable and acts as a base station only, without routing or firewall functionality.
Universal repeater - The device wirelessly connects to any existing wireless network, and starts acting as a base station on the same wireless network, thus amplifying the range of the original network.
